Tingling Fingers

Are you experiencing tingling figures and want to know what caused them? Learn some information today to rule out or understand some of the reasons for the cause of this condition.

Tingling fingers are abnormal sensations that can indicate any of a long list of problems. One of the common causes of this condition can be long periods during which the body is in the same position, placing pressure on a particular area of the body and limiting blood flow to the arms and hands.

A large number of medical conditions can potentially cause tingling fingers, including multiple sclerosis, diabetic neuropathy, and carpal tunnel syndrome and nerve injuries. When you go to see your doctor, you should know that it is very important to identify which fingers are tingling in order to arrive at a correct diagnosis.

Tingling Finger Causes

Tingling fingers can also indicate nerve damage. Neck injuries often lead to numbness and this condition. Neck sprains, such as those caused by whiplash often associated with car accidents, are known to cause swelling, muscle spasms, decreased flexibility and tingling in the arms and fingers.

With the increase of computer and keyboard use over the years, diagnosed cases of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome have increased exponentially. The carpal tunnel is a thin passageway at the base of the hand where it connects to the wrist. The tunnel, made of bone and ligaments, houses the median nerve running from the forearm to the hand and carries impulses from the brain to the hand. The narrowing of the tunnel can cause the median nerve to malfunction, leading to various problems including tingling fingers.

If not treated, Carpal Tunnel symptoms can eventually make it difficult for a sufferer to use his hand.

Other causes of tingling fingers include diabetes, migraines, multiple sclerosis, seizures, stroke, underactive thyroid, abnormal levels of calcium, potassium or sodium in the body, exposure to high levels of lead and B12 deficiency. Certain medications can also cause tingling fingers, as can prolonged use of alcohol and tobacco products and radiation therapy.

When to Seek Medical Assistance

Seek medical attention if holding your fingers in certain positions causes tingling sensations, pain or numbness. Often, such symptoms will occur while you are holding your hands in a position that stresses your fingers, such as driving a car, talking on the telephone or holding up a book, magazine or newspaper while you're reading it.

Consider any tickly present in your fingers when you first wake up in the morning to be suspicious, especially if it occurs with relative frequency. This is especially important if the tingling is accompanied by soreness when you stretch out your fingers.

See a doctor if some, but not all, of your fingers tingle for a reason that's not immediately apparent. You should also know that it doesn't mean you're not suffering from underlying conditions just because the tingling goes away when you shake your hands to increase blood flow to your fingers.

It’s always advisable to pay close attention to your figures symptoms to make sure there is nothing serious is going on behind the sensation. One of the most important things you can do about this condition is to seek help medical advice from your doctor if you have a feeling that something may not be right.

Thank you. Good informative hub. Yes, I get the tingling at times, mostly at nights, even when I wear my braces, but when I move my arms downward it goes away. I stretch a lot during the day.

The more I write on HP, the more my fingers tingle...I always assumed it was a sign of great things to come (like an old wives' tale). Guess I should talk to the doc about carpel tunnel.

You might want to also check out "ulnar neuropathy". This is a big problem if it is only the ring and pinky fingers that are tingling. I had to have unlar ligation on my right arm after working in a pizza shope for some time. It will not go away after carpal tunnel surgery. Great info.
